Dette Allmark is an accomplished artist and writer specialising in the Drawn image
Based in Edinburgh she creates beautiful works primarily in pencil, as well as paint and various printmaking techniques.
Works emerge on the paper without preconception, either as responses to an eternal enquiry into personal and collective visual myths, or in response to live performance, or engagement with with fine art.
Dette also creates written poetic reflections on the experience of artistry, single motherhood, femininity, and poetry held within biography.
Drawing is central to my artistic practice as a means to witness and interpret observed, conceptual and imagined realities. what has emerged into a personal language which puts form to a constellation of personal myths and narratives. These drawn images allow access of both the artist and viewer into an uncalculated liminal space. I am fascinated by drawing, as an expression of narrative, mythological and religious ideas and symbolism. Derived from the need to put visual form to symbolic reflections on personal biography and interrogate concepts drawn from inner and external observations. This practice forms a theatrical dreamscape where new narratives unconsciously erupt to cascade and collide on to the page fuelling an unrehearsed drawn performance.
I trained at Edinburgh College of Art at Bachelor’s and Master’s degree level followed by a year at the Royal Drawing School. I received the James Cummings drawing award, the Andrew Grant scholarship, the Royal Drawing School scholarship . My Drawings and writings have been published online as well as in a publication collaborating with the former composer Nigel Morgan. My artworks have been included in a British council tour in Korea, exhibited at the Edinburgh Printmakers, as well as being held in The kings Royal collection, RSA and private collections.
Recently I was an artist in residence for the kings Gallery, Renaissance Drawing Exhibition at Holyrood palace, Edinburgh. And this August have been awarded an artist in residence place at Dumfries house through The Royal Drawing School. Previously I completed an artist in Residence in the Nyon region of Switzerland.
My work as a visiting artist for the The Scottish opera in 2025 culminated in an exhibition at the festival Theatre, Edinburgh last November and works in connection to the Royal collections will be exhibited at Edinburgh’s Dr Neil’s Garden in September.
Whether from engagement with fine art or live performance, or in response to my own reflections, personal biography and concepts, I create images that form an alliance with the cast of characters and the multiple narratives embedded in to these still but vibrating drawn stages.
